- List the chemical elements and state the roles of carbohydrates, fats and protein in living organisms.
- Describe and carry out tests for starch (using iodine in potassium iodide solution), reducing sugars (using
Benedict’s solution), protein (using biuret solution) and fats (using ethanol). - State the synthesis of small basic molecules such as glucose, amino acid, fatty acids and glycerol to form large molecules.
- Using the ‘lock and key’ hypothesis to explain the role of enzymes in a biological reaction.
- Explain the effects of temperature and pH on the rate of enzyme catalysed reactions
- Understand the relationship between DNA, genes and chromosomes.
- Describe the formation of DNA as a double helix comprising two strands of nucleotides where each nucleotide has a sugar, a phosphate group and one of four different bases.
- Understand and apply the rule of complementary base pairing.
- State the fundamental property of gene.
- Understand the use of DNA to carry the genetic code, that is used to synthesise specific polypeptides.
- Describe how genes may be transferred from the cells of one organism to the cells of another to form transgenicorganisms
